All Out Of Bubblegum: ‘They Live- The Card Game’ Crowdfunding Campaign Nears Its End

Welcome to the table,

“I have come here to chew bubble gum and kick ass, and I’m all out of bubble gum.”

I actually don’t really like bubble gum. I also did not know where that iconic pop culture phrase came from until I was well into my 20s and one of my friends randomly showed me They Live because he was trying to date someone who was really into it. While The Thing, Big Trouble in Little China, and In the Mouth of Madness were huge parts of my creative DNA, They Live was not something that ever really crossed into my spheres until it had been out for well over a decade.

Based on John Carpenter‘s iconic movie, They Live, by StudioCanal, is in the last days of a Kickstarter for a new card game that will test your strategic thinking, teamwork, and ability to uncover hidden truths.

In They Live: The Card Game, not everyone is who they claim to be. Among the players lurk secret Invaders dead set on enslaving the city and annihilating humanity. The odds are in the humans’ favor in terms of numbers, but the Invaders hold a crucial advantage in that they know the true identities of all the players while the human players are left wondering who is Earth-born and who is a deadly invader in disguise.

To survive this game of treachery, you must collaborate with your fellow players, pooling your resources, arming yourselves, defeating enemies, and ultimately revealing the Invader before it’s too late to stop the downfall of all mankind.

Each turn introduces fresh resources, ranging from weapons and ammunition to city parts and more. Players take turns equipping the cards they require to bolster their chances of survival. However, enemies can emerge alongside these resources, forcing the players to confront them with hopefully a united front. However, someone among the ranks may not be pulling their weight. The Invader can attempt to fool their fellow players undermining their attempts at survival.

As the game progresses, character’s health becomes increasingly critical, and when your health reaches its breaking point, other players can deploy their Hoffman Lenses cards to unmask your true identity, potentially exposing you as an Invader.

Should you suspect a fellow player of being an Invader, you have the option to attack them and then verify their true identity by examining their card. Alternatively, if you happen to be an Invader yourself, you can launch an attack on another player and craft a convincing lie about what you discovered on their card to distract and deflect the other players from uncovering your dark secret.

As a fan of quick-play games where you are not sure if you can trust your fellow players, They Live seems to have the makings of an unforgettable gaming experience where every move counts and every decision could make or break your fate. You can jump on the last days of the Kickstarter at the link.

Until next time, welcome to the resistance.
