If you thought Dark Ride’s Devil Land was scary, wait until you see what’s underneath it.
Most of this sixth issue of the series deals with the garbage pit that lies beneath the fictionalized Disney World from Hell. And in keeping with the genre, it’s very much the funk of 40,000 years. Well maybe not quite that many, but you get the point.
Suffice it to say that every bit of trash – from old maps to the vomit of kids ate one too many Blood Bars – from the park’s opening to modern times has been collected underneath the park. And, as is fitting, the garbage pit is “maintained” by Alastair, a crazy old man who doesn’t take kindly to trespassers to his domain – even if they are the boss’ son.
It’s a different view for the series, which has largely focused on the park itself and the dynamics of the Dante family, the patriarch of which founded the park. It gives artist Andrei Bressan something new to draw – though there’s enough of a view of the park’s insane rides to please readers.
The issue is basically one long chase scene with Alastair hunting down son Sam and Summer. An extended chase could potentially work in a movie, but since it occupies the majority of this issue, it gets old pretty quickly. Viewed from the point of view of the entire story arc, the chase might work. As an individual issue, though, it borders on boring.
Sure, writer Joshua Williamson gives us some background on the characters as they are being chased, but there are other ways to get that information out. Still Williamson is an experienced writer with a track records of tell good tales. He deserves the benefit of the doubt.
We know from the creators’ notes in the back of the issue that Alastair will be back for at least the next two issues. Hopefully he’ll leave the trash where it belongs and give us more of a story.
Dark Ride #6 will be available for purchase tomorrow.
