After a tremendous amount of buildup, Titans has finally reached its last climax. This episode delivered on many fronts. It has a satisfying conclusion that wrapped up all of its characters into a nice bow. It also had plenty of action, effects, and emotional moments. Still, the series didn’t finish as strong as it started. It became extremely wonky towards the end. The main threat, in that Brother Blood (Joseph Morgan) wanted to use a S.T.A.R. Labs’ wormhole to destroy another planet, felt contrived and strange. But it does fall in line with the previous season, which saw something just as wild. Each season tried to up the other in terms of how fantastical it could get, which ended up hurting the show in the long run.
After Brother Blood summoned Trigon, he killed the demon to absorb its power and become even stronger. It also appeared as if Brother Blood had killed Connor (Joshua Orpin). The Titans tried to revive him, but they were unsuccessful at first. The Titans eventually figured out Brother Blood’s plan to use the wormhole to annihilate Tamaran and went to stop him. An epic battle broke out, and the Titans appear to be losing until Connor came back to life and defeated their foe. In the end, the Titans decided to go their separate ways as they continue to grow as heroes and people.
The only character who had an arc left open was Beast Boy (Ryan Potter). This was probably done to leave a back door open for a new series, which most likely will not manifest. Titans began as a dark and gritty take on the characters. This was more or less lost by the end. The costumes were great, but they were also flashy. The plots were the same way. The overall tone of the story felt very in line with comic book corniness, but that was never the show’s intention. It slowly transitioned towards that place, which caused the show to lose a lot of the magic it had in the beginning. Still, given all of the failed superhero adaptations there are out there, Titans could have been a lot worse.
