The Art Of Comics
Last weekend, 12 to 14 May, Tripwire’s editor-in-chief Joel Meadows was at the fourth annual Lake Como Comic Art Festival in Cernobbio, Como, northern Italy and here’s his report with a few photos from it…
I have been to tens of shows over the years in the UK, the US and places in Europe. Some have a guest list of high-profile creators, well-known publishers and retailers while others focus on the more independent side of the business. Many have loads of cosplayers and funko and merchandising sellers. Lake Como Comic Art Festival is a show that is just about the art of comics. Situated in a glass-topped conference centre next to a villa that dates from the 19th century, the show sets out its stall with an opening evening that includes all of the guests descending on the villa with drinks and food laid on for everyone who is there. On the Saturday and the Sunday, the show offers a showcase of the best artists from the UK, US and Europe, there to create sketches, sign books and sell their original art. There were also original art dealers present with a pretty impressive selection of pages and covers for sale from across the eras of the comics industry. While I was there, I was lucky enough to reconnect with Liam Sharp, Cully Hamner, Dan Brereton, Lee Bermejo, Simon Bisley, Brian Stelfreeze, Mark Buckingham, David Mack and Dave McKean and to meet for the first time Tom Grindberg, Kevin Eastman, Art Adams, Joyce Chin and Mike Grell. Lake Como is a very impressive comic show with a very laidback and welcoming atmosphere to it that celebrates the art of the medium in one of the most beautiful settings in the world and I hope to return to it next year. It is a truly unique convention experience although the ticket price is obviously higher than your regular show. However this is an event designed for original comic art collectors so it is a very different affair. Here are a few photos I took at the show and a few around the area as well.
