Review: ‘Green Arrow’ #2 Is Nice And Complicated- Just The Way Ollie Likes It

It’s been way too long since Oliver Queen has starred in his own series. Thankfully, DC’s Dawn of DC initiative is changing that, and with Green Arrow #2, we get to see that wait was worth it.

Joshua Williamson, Sean Izaakse, Romulo Fajardo Jr., and Troy Peteri dive into a whole mess of chaos.

Roy Harper and Dinah Lance are on the trail of their missing family members. That means taking their war to Amanda Waller. Meanwhile, Ollie and Lian are doing their best to survive on the alien world that they’ve been kidnapped to!

Williamson takes the most logical step he could here, and this new series is all the better for it. Like Superman and Batman, Ollie has built a family around himself. Williamson splits them up and puts combinations of characters together to great effect.

The mystery and adventure are both interesting, and I love the pursuit of Waller as a device to drive the plot. He also shows that he gets the characters though, as Ollie, Roy and Dinah’s personalities drive the plot as much as the MacGuffin (plus he has Ollie make chili, the most GA detail ever). It’s the best thing he’s written at DC in a long time and I had a blast with it.

Izaakse’s work has a lot of dynamism and energy. He uses his layouts to create a sense of motion as the figures move across the page. His designs make Ollie feel like he’s been struggling in this setting for some time. Fajardo’s colors add a sense of heightened reality, making everything feel alien without feeling unrealistic.

Ollie and family are at their best in a long time. I’ve missed seeing them as a part of the DCU and this is a great start to their return to being front and center.
